Abstrakt

The discussion of the perceptions of the Holy Scripture in Denmark and Norway during the Enlightenment is preceded by a brief presentation of the process of creating Bible translations into national languages, mainly in the sixteenth century. During the Enlightenment, three approaches emerged. In chronological order, the first to be mentioned is the one represented by Lutheran orthodoxy, a direction developing in the Evangelical Lutheran Church from the end of the sixteenth century. Utilizing the tools of classical scholasticism and drawing on Aristotelianism, the orthodox approached the Bible as a sacred text, the source of faith and the highest authority, but also a favorite subject of scholarly studies. Biblical exegesis in the form of learned considerations adorned with dozens of quotations, the emphasis on learning the truths of faith, and the ritualization of religious practices led to the ossification and mechanization of religious faith. In opposition to orthodoxy, Pietism began reaching Denmark and Norway from the end of the seventeenth century, perceiving religious faith primarily as a feeling. In this approach, reading the Bible was a source of love for God and Jesus, having the power to transform a person by bringing about ‘awakening’ and ‘rebirth’ and perfecting his nature. This is illustrated by various works: scholarly treatises and liturgical textbooks by Erik Pontoppidan (1698–1764) and religious poetry by Hans Adolph Brorson (1694–1764). Enlightenment tendencies are represented in the monarchy by Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754), who engaged in polemics with deism, striving to show that a significant part of the biblical message can be rationally explained, although it must also be acknowledged that there are contents in it that go beyond human cognitive powers. This was a rather moderate approach, which at the end of the eighteenth century briefly gave way to a more radical perception of the Bible as a work of man set in historical time.
